Diabetes
A silent killer. 6.2% US population (17 million people) and ~8-10% of Indian population suffering from diabetes. Each day 2,200 people in US and 17,000 in India diagnosed with Diabetes. 2-4 times higher risk of developing heart disease and stroke. Associated with many other complications.

Obesity
A Global epidemic. 120 million adults in US overweight (69 million overweight and 51 million obese). 61% of US adults, and 26% of US population under age 20 are overweight. Obesity increases the risk of illness from about 30 serious medical conditions.

In most cases Type 2 Diabetes and Obesity share common pathological conditions, including low HDL, high triglycerides, and insulin resistance, collectively described as Syndrome X

India is the nation with most diabetics. Officially there are 41 million Indians with the disease, but in some part of India as many as 15% of the population suffer from diabetes. Elsewhere in the vast country, diabetes rates of between 9% and 14%. So, even taking the lower of the two marks, it is clear that India, with its population of 1.1 billion, has upwards of 100 million diabetics and that figure is growing every year. This necessitates discovery of affordable therapy of diabetes.

Diabetes causes myriad medical complications: heart disease, blindness, loss of limbs and death.
Monotherapy of diabetes has often shown to be inadequate in controlling hyperglycemia. Therefore, most type 2 diabetic patients undergo combination therapy targeting one of the following pathways: enhanced insulin secretion, insulin sensitization, inhibition of glucose production, absorption of carbohydrate and glucose utilization. Efforts are also underway by some pharmaceutical industries to enhance glucose excretion via novel mechanism.

In-house R & D
Clonegen Biotechnology has developed proprietary assays to screen synthetic compounds and natural product libraries for triglyceride lowering and HDL elevation. Efforts are also underway on a unique combination therapy that aggressively normalizes hypertriglyceridemia and glucose, and reduces lipid deposition in the arteries of diabetic patients.
